The game we love is evolving to be faster, fairer, and safer for everyone on the field.
For those of us heading into the 2026 season, the "standard" Saturday afternoon is about to look a little different. AFL Central Victoria has just confirmed they are adopting the new rule interpretations at the community level.
And the biggest change is the end of the traditional centre bounce.
By moving to a throw-up at every restart, the league is focusing on umpire health and creating a much cleaner contest for rucks. Plus, with the new 5-man interchange (replacing the old substitute rule), teams now have more flexibility to keep the intensity high for all four quarters.
It's about making the game more accessible for umpires and more consistent for players. While tradition is important, these shifts ensure that the local game stays modern, fast, and exciting for the next generation of senior stars.
Are you a fan of losing the centre bounce, or do you miss the traditional start? Let us know in the comments.
